For this trip we tried something different. Instead of making our own reservations for everything we decided to try Gate1 Travel. Gate1 had many itineraries to pick from and we decided on the Budapest/Prague independent travel itinerary which included very reasonable round trip flights, a choice of a couple of hotels in each city for 3 nights and a 1st class train trip from Budapest to Prague. Our hotel in Budapest wasn't bad since we would not be in it except to sleep but the hotel in Prague was fantastic...more on that later.
For our flight we had the opportunity to upgrade to 1st class for a great price so we decided to splurge and try out 1st class for the very first time. Had the price not been so good we would have skipped it. It was well worth the money.
Here are a few photos from our 1st class seats along with meals and other perks. I sure wish the new Economy seats were now 1st class...it was sweet and we could get used to this level of pampering...if only it wasn't so expensive.
As soon as we boarded and got comfy we were served champagne...I opted for the orange juice
We each received our own travel bag..airline equivalent to a "swag bag"
we had duo seats in a pod or cubicle
When you had the seat lower into a bed your feet would go in this little padded area
I love those warmed up wash cloths with that lemon smell to them...so refreshing. I always grab Veronica's cloth when she is done and give myself a proper arm and face sponge bath
Our menus to choose from
They started us off with snacks and a drink. No little bags containing 9 peanuts for us.
Below is what they consider appetizers
We were flying KLM so these little dutch clogs were actually salt and pepper shakers
Braised short ribs
And desert...i was tired and forgot all about the breakfast photos
Upon landing we caught up with our transfer service to the K+K Hotel Opera in Budapest, Hungary.
The room was small but adequate for our needs since we spent most of the day and evening out and about. The rooms keys were a little different. It was rectangle in shape and had some type of chip built into it. You pressed it up against an area near the outside room door lock and it opened that way. We had to turn the keys in each time we left the hotel...probably because of the cost of replacing this type of security key system.
Below...one of the many ruin bars in Budapest. Romkocsma, as they are called locally, are massive abandoned buildings that have been converted into bars and eclectic hangouts. Like old factories, abandoned department stores and former apartment complexes all turned into bars or clubs. Each one has its own unique look and feel.

In this church you could walk up to the top where they have a walkway around the dome for a great view of the city. A window near the stairs leading up to the dome.

Heroes Square in Budapest. They were preparing for the National Gallop event where horse riders dressed in Hungarian garb compete in a race. It is also a celebration of Hungarian traditions and is a large scaled cultural festival
