A Trip To Mackinac (Mackinaw) Island

Back in 1999, when we lived in Michigan, we had the opportunity to take a day trip to Mackinac Island. We took the Star Line Hydro-Jet Ferry from the city of Mackinaw to the Island. The Ferry trip to the island took less than 20 minutes.
Upon our arrival on Mackinac Island we noticed that there were absolutely no cars there. Everyone got around by rental bikes or you can bring your own for a small fee to the Ferry company, walking or by taking the numerous horse drawn carriages. There are approximately 500-600 permanent residents on the island.
It iws approximately 8.3 miles around the island via a perimeter road. The island is really interesting to walk around. You can take a walking tour or a carriage tour of the island. There is biking and hiking. They have a drive it yourself carriage tour, golf course, historical park, haunted theater, a Butterfly Conservatory and a Butterfly House. Veronica and I went to the Butterfly House. You have to be careful going in and out because they don't want any of the butterflies to get away. They actually physically check your clothes front and back to make sure there are no hitchikers trying to make the great escape. For more information about what Mackinac Island has to offer, please visit the link below:

Hi Rick.... 1st, thanks for stopping by Chase Images...my photo blog. Next...you have captured a piece of my childhood here. I grew up in Grand Haven Mich and spent many summer months on Mac. Isle and Beaver Isle...I've lived in upstate NY since '78, but my family are all still in the Grand Haven area. As a kid we took many trips in the family boat... a large vessel... up the coast of lk. mich. taking 3 days to get to Mac. Isle with port stay overs in different lake towns and villages. I so loved these trip and I love Mac., with my own trips there as a teen working odd jobs and I've taken my on kids there as an adult. Thanks for this and it's been a pleasure meeting you. I'll place a link of your blog in my blog roll.

I followed the link from Plant Buddy and I'm glad I did.

Living in Toronto we aren't that far from Mackinac Island, but have never been there.

After looking at your photos, I think its about time we went.

I love the photos you got of these butterflies. I know how hard it is to get these shots. Butterflies must be some of the most challenging and rewarding photography subjects. The zebra striped butterflies actually live around my house. I can often find 10-20 of them floating around the flowers in the park here in Florida. Great blog. Keep up the good work.

An island where people get around on their own steam, without cars--what an idyllic place! And add some gorgeous butterflies on top of that. I have such a huge list of places I need to go sometime, and the list has just grown longer. Thanks for sharing your travels!

Good Morning Rich and thank you for your very nice comment on 'asexual...'in the TYRA'S GARDEN blog. That was very nice. I love to meet new people and see 'their world' through their eyes. You got a very nice blog as well Rich and so much to read, I'll come back soon. The butterflies (beautiful photos) are they from around where you live? It is such a great collection, any names?....that was a lot of Q./ xoxo Tyra

Rick,
I love your butterfly photos - such beautiful patterns and colors. I lived in Williamsburg and Yorktown for a brief period, and find myself missing that area from time to time. No matter where you went, there was some piece of history attached to it. It was fascinating. One of my favorite places to visit was Jamestown.
I enjoyed visiting your blog!

Beautiful photography from the beautiful world you inhabit. I grew up in Indiana and went to camp many times on Portage Lake in Michigan. I've lived in New York for nearly forty years, in the city itself and now, also on the North Fork of Long Island, hence the name of my blog, From The North Fork. I am an avid fisherman too, my focus is barbless salt water fly fishing for blues, striped bass and whatever else is taking. I am one mile from the Peconic Bay and two miles from the Long Island Sound so I can nearly always fish with a wind advantage from shore. I often fish from my Boston Whaler too fishing around Plum Island, Little Gull and Gardiner's Island. I'm enjoying your blog very much. Keep up the good work!

Hi Rick, thanks for stopping by my blog, I appreciate your kind comments.

Wow, those butterflies are incredible! I've never seen that many, except at a butterfly exhibition, they must really like what you're growing!

Had to come back and ponder the butterfly shots again. Sweet goodness. ... oh did you get my Mom's comment? She said she left it on your guestbook (she's not really blog savvy, as far as comments go) ... but she was worried you didn't get it.

These butterfiles are very beautiful! You must have spent a lot of time photographing them as they are not easy to capture in photos.
All the best! Cheers
